This will remain an esoteric question, if you know what I'm talking about great. If not, check out a full blog entry about it on my site, here here.

I suggest you read it, as it supports the following question:

Why has it taken VALVe three previously failed attempts, and nearly a decade to create a game with one of the simplest online FPS formulas ever?

TFC invariably set into motion the most widely emulated gameplay method for a multiplayer shooter ever. Capture the darn flag without dying. Does it really take 10 years to create something like that? Albeit, graphics and networking for online games have changed, but this is not the first time Valve has balked on releasing a game much longer than promised.

  1. There was never a need for them to push it out immediately since it was always going to be a free add-on and therefore not make them a dime.
  2. Another game where they have to constantly update sucks for them.
  3. Money.

Because CounterStrike sucks. They owe it to TFC lovers to get something out.

For the purists, Fortress-Forever (a much more TFC-like, community based Source port) will be out... well... one day.

To answer your question on where it is: it's coming with EP2, along with Portals (one of the coolest addon's I've ever seen).

Why did it take so long? Because TF2 started life as a cross between counter-strike and BF2. It then got forgotten about as they updated TFC and CS. Then HL2 came about so they weren't going to waste effort on a game using the old engine... And that's where we are today.

I should point out that TF2 is not free. You have to buy it as part of the EP2 addon pack.

Mmm. Team Fortress 2... man how I looked forward to that game. The Half-Life 1 engine had the best networking code in existence. It was completely playable over a 56K connection. Yum.

How about a little research....

Team Fortress 2 was originally going to look like another basic team war-type game. Sure it looked cool at first, but after all the Battlefield, and Vietnam games, TF2 just looked like another clone. Valve wanted to do something different for it, but wasn't too sure so they put it on the back burner for awhile.

Then what did they do? Oh yeah....they release Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Counterstrike Source, Steam, etc. They've been busy releasing great games - games that I would rather have than TF2.

But now, TF2 is completely redesigned and looks to be a hell of a lot of fun. It will be released with Half-Life 2: Episode Two and Portal. It's included in the package, which should be released Q3/Q4 of this year (I hope).

Call me a Valve fanboi if you want, but they have yet to disappoint me. Sure their constant delays get frustrating and annoying, but that ensures a great, bug free game in the end.
