I believe the PS3 comes out in November, and it will be including a Blu-Ray drive and (obviously) high definition playback of games and movies and stuff. Blu-Ray drives are outrageously expensive, so for a few hundred bucks past a Blu-Ray drive you can get a full-blown PS3 gaming system.... sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

What do you guys think?

I was all set on the PS3 but it is quite pricey and I'm hesitant now because of all the rave reviews about the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. Not to mention the Wii is going to be a pretty strong offering from Nintendo.

Yeah but look at the prices for Blu-Ray drives (Froogle comparison) and for about $200 LESS you get a PS3 which includes a Blu-Ray drive. Yes it's going to cost like $800, but the hardware include is nasty.

I guess it'd be worth it for the Blu-Ray drive. But I'm gonna let HD-DVD and Blu-Ray battle it out before I drop any money on either of them.

In any case, Sony still needs to prove themselves as far as I'm concerned. They haven't showed us shit and we're only a few months away from launch.

It seems every other day another rumour of them ripping Nintendo or MS surfaces in regards to a new "feature" of the PS3.

The Xbox 360 has really done a 360 since it's been released and it's one hell of a gaming system now. With the camera, wireless racing wheel, wireless headset and HD-DVD drive coming this winter, along with the arsenal of amazing games... I don't even think I'm gonna bother with the PS3 or the Wii for that matter, for some time to come.

I'll let you know when I play the games.

I think it's worth the money, but still a lot to drop on a gaming system. The 360 seems to be doing real damn good, so I'm going to stick with it for awhile until Sony really shows me that it's worth spending that much on their system.

Short answer: No. Long answer: Blu-Ray is not enough of a selling point for me, at least until it's amply demonstrated (through virtually universal adoption) that it's not next year's Betamax.

Set aside the Blu-Ray and what you have is a grossly expensive gaming machine. It would take an extraordinary collection of PS3-exclusive games for me to consider the purchase--and that collection is not likely to be available at launch. Maybe a year after, maybe two--and by that point the price should have dropped to something approaching sanity.

I like my 360. I like my computer. I'll probably enjoy the Wii. I think that will probably be enough for a while.

honestly, who is the the real consumer in this market. its not the kids, its the parents of the kids. now if little billy is asks for a PS3 for christmas, it doesn't really matter what grand disk format they use, as long as sony can get to that kid, the hard part is done.

now for the rest of use that pay attention to those things, i think it is worth the money, IF the can match xbox with the online community. its to a point now that if you aren't on xbox live then you wasted your money on an xbox. and matt with all his damn pics is making it hard for me to hold off from buying one.

I understand that Blu-Ray, the Cell, and Yellowstone are all expensive technologies but I really can't believe Sony is losing money on the console with such a high price tag - Regardless it will be nice to see the cell finally in action.

I shall be waiting for the X360 HD-DVD to be released, /then/ compare prices.

ericj -- the gamer is no longer limited to kids. As gamers of the 80s have grown up into wage-earning adults, the average age of the gamer has steady increased. Kids are now just a market subset -- not to say they're not an important market subset, but they are just a subset. Winning the battle in the 14 and under crowd won't assure you a win in the war by any stretch.

I'm totally getting a Wii on release day. The PS3 I might wait on. Like when I can afford one...
